UNIVERSITY HISTORY

The Universidad de San Jose was approved by the Consejo Nacional de Educación Superior Universitaria Privada (CONESUP), organism attached to the Ministry of Education in Costa Rica, on September 17, 1992. While it is true that the university has just turned twenty three years of creation, the experience in the private higher education field dates from 1976, when it started as a college attached to the Universidad Autónoma de Centroamérica.

The USJ is a private higher education institution, constituted by a students’ interactive community educational body and administrative personnel. Its essential mission is training proffesionals with humanistic approach, high competitiveness, skills and enterprising spirit, through the development of plans and updated programs. Besides the teaching-learning process is performed with academic excellence which promotes principles, values and democratic life attitudes , respect for human rights, and ethics in the practice of a profession and service vocation for society development in economic, political, social, environmental and cultural aspects.

NOWADAYS

Nowadays, the University is made up by more than 1500 students in the main venue and 6000 distributed in its regional venues.

The Universidad de San José has projected throughout our country with regional venues, which offer real alternatives to improve. Nowadays, it has venues in San José, San Carlos, San Ramón, Liberia, Nicoya, Guápiles and Puntarenas.

AIMS

Develop its students morally and scientifically to practice their professions and train researchers and technicians for the development of science, letters, and the arts.
Raise awareness in students about the commitment with disadvantaged groups in our society, oriented by our l freedom, justice and democracy values.
Sponsor the teachers development for scientific and university teaching, making it become a profession.
Develop a free, open, conventional and e-learning university, which will offer its services according to the groups, people and institutions requirements and demand.
Collaborate with statewide and particular institutions in researching social, economic, and cultural problems.
Serving Costa Rica and Central America interests, strengthening relationships with Latin American countries and worldwide, through the teachers and students exchange and universities and organizations cooperation, following the same goals.
Contributing with the national culture development organizing the University Extension for society benefits.
